Models of Crystal Structures

Models of crystal structures are intended to be used as demonstration objects. The ideal atomic structure of a crystal is represented in a simplified way. Atoms are symbolized by balls with different colors indicating different atomic species. Interatomic bonds are symbolized by sticks. As a general rule, the structure model represents the smallest repeating building unit of a crystal, the unit cell. In addition to atomic bonds, sticks mark the edges of the unit cell as well. The size of the models amounts to ca. 50 cm in all directions in space which makes these models suitable for presentation in front of a large auditorium. Models of the crystal structure allow for identifying the position of atoms within the unit cell and for recognizing the coordination by neighboring atoms. Moreover, the symmetry properties of the atomic arrangement can be discussed and finally, the crystallographic space group can be derived. Structure models of various kinds of crystalline materials are part of the collection. The variety ranges from pure chemical elements, 2- and 3-atomic materials to complex structures and silicates.
